I once had an insurance policy (through my employment) that would pay for the diagnostics (lab, xray, etc.) if they came back with abnormal results. If the results were normal, I had to pay the cost myself. So, doing an array of tests to try to pin down the cause of symptoms could get pretty expensive!

I had a policy like that where I worked. They would automatically reject any facial surgery as cosmetic, and any X-ray as routine and not covered. Then I world have to fight to prove that my face was sliced open and the X-rays and the surgery were necessary to find out how much damage I did to myself in the auto accident.

I have a very rare condition, so went through a lot of tests to diagnose it. (Well over 130 tests.) Hearing that the test results were normal just meant they hadn’t found the problem yet. It took a pathological examination of a muscle biopsy to finally come up with the diagnosis. I was told it would have been fatal if not caught and treated in time. So, a normal test result doesn’t mean you’re fine, just that it didn’t show what’s wrong.
