Delores: Ok, Allen... So how do I stop a standard transmission?
Allen: Put your foot on the clutch...
Delores: Ok
Allen: Then brake.
Delores: Sorry. These glasses have little depth perception.
Allen: That's ok. I'll be more of a priority if I'm bleeding.
You press the brake first, not the clutch. With the clutch engaged and no foot on the gas pedal, the engine compression helps slow the car. Put the clutch in when the car slows enough that it would stall the engine..(Showing my age)
