Man, just how many times WERE alternate strips prepared, I wonder? This is yet another instance of multiple versions of a strip existing. As originally printed in the old book “Loose Tails,” Opus was originally calling in support of penguin “lust”, not “love,” and Donahue replied that the day’s topic was nun beating, not husband beating.
This version is, while still quite funny, considerably softer in its impact. I would bet anything that this was prepared as an alternative for wimpier newspaper editors, and that after a zillion years have gone by Breathed can’t really be bothered to ferret out which versions were which. But these alternates keep popping up. It must have been done quite often…

Um, back in the day when this was first printed it was Penguin “Lust” and you’re right, it wasn’t husband beating, it was “Nun” beating.

I might, possibly, support Penguin Love, if it involved penguins. But I cannot support Penguin Lust, if it involves penguins….
