Lucky for us, the breeding program was a big success, and viable populations have been reestablished in the wild, most prominently in California, Colorado, and the Northeast US.

On the other hand, now that populations are back up, it’s become open season year round again, and the bag limits were dropped from the regulations.

A puzzle. In our countries (USA and Canada) we often lump liberal and socialism together. In many other countries socialism and communism are linked, neither being liberal. Confusing.

The explosion of liberal social programs under LBJ in the late ‘60s and early 70s produced what was perceived as 1) way too much government interference and red tape, 2) at way too high a price tag, and 3) with way too few positive results; (I clearly remember an anti-poverty program exec coming before my local government funding authority and saying , ’Our program is so successful, we’ve doubled the number of benefit recipients and need a lot more money!’). It gave “Liberal” a bad name, and is part of what led to the election of Ronald Reagan. Thereafter, no candidate could get elected while wearing a “Liberal” label, so leftist candidates started calling themselves “Progressives” instead.

If I recall Jim Watt, that “refuge” should be a postage-stamp sized parcel of broken glass, toxic sludge and air so thick you can carve your initials in it.
