I remember hearing in the news, in the 70s or 80s, that movie theaters had been experimenting with this. There was great outcry, and it was quickly outlawed. I find myself wondering, though, if it had become commonplace, would people have actually learned to examine their impulses, and generally think about what they’ve been manipulated into thinking?
Subliminal messages have become more widespread, subtle and out-of-the shadows. Consider the use of music: How many product jingles are lodged in your mind?(Plop plop, fizz fizz, oh what a relief it is…, etc. etc.). How many ads use sexually tinged performers? Sexy looking girls touting products appeal to men and women alike!(Women want to BE them, men want to HAVE them, so the image is linked to the product.). Success memes: (If you use this product you will be like [famous person]). Insidious advertizing. Flip-side: You won’t pay too much attention to this because it’s just text.
