Playing triangle turned out to be impossible for the pianist in my HS jazz ensemble. They were playing probably the most prestigious gig the band ever played in its nearly 60 years: The Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The chart they were playing started with a fast 5/4 bass obbligato that formed the basis for a rubato brass chorale over it. The band director wanted the pianist to strike the triangle on every downbeat of the bass. On the very first downbeat, he missed the triangle and struck the thumb on the hand holding the triangle. At this, the instrument started rotating slowly. He never managed to strike the instrument; merely flailed futilely at the slowly spinning triangle until it was time for him to sit down and start playing piano.

My guess he also could’ve done viola, but got carpal tunnel syndrome when stroking the bow.

Additional minutiae: The striker should be used on the edge opposite the open corner.
