Too early in August for Philly, they wouldn’t pay for AC in the schools and the heat/humidity is bad in the city.

Suburbs north of New York City: first day of school was ALWAYS half a day, the day after Labor Day. Not so in other parts of the U.S. and still makes me wonder why August when it’s not odd to hear about cancelled days due to the heat. Labor Day is a good “end of summer” marker, even if there are some super hot days after then.
