The number of times I’ve been tripped up by inconsiderate dog walkers……. ban them!

Those type of leashes break easily as well so the dog runs away or can get hit by a car.

They have locks to stop them from unreeling at some point, right? It’s still a decent physical space joke.

I almost hit a dog with my van because of those leashes. He had dodged between two parked cars chasing a squirrel. Fortunately, I was only doing 15 mph because I was coming to an intersection.

All of my dogs have been trained to walk to heel whilst on the lead.

I’ve never had a retractable leash break and hadn’t realized they could — thanks for the heads up, GuardianM3 and DOSQueen. I’m hoping the tape (vs. cord) type that I prefer is less likely to break. But I’ve had a pup pull a retractable leash out of my hand and run, terrified, as the handle bounced after him — fortunately, not into the street. I stopped using them near streets after that. My current dog pulls too much when she sees another dog or person she wants to meet to use a retractable leash anywhere but at the beach, so she can wade into the water, or when hiking.
