Jim KernerDepends on how you determine it. In 1775, the Continental Congress decreed that the term “United Colonies” should be replaced by “United States”. July 2, 1776 they approved Harry Lee’s motion “that these states are, and of a right to be, free and independent,,,”. Two days later the formal declaration was adopted..Just saying you’re a nation doesn’t make you one. The Confederacy was never recognized by anyone. In 1775, John Paul Jones, flying a variant of the Grand Union flag, received a salute from the Dutch in Curaçao. In the Treaty of Paris (September 3, 1783), Britain acknowledged US independence..So are one of these events when “the United States came about” or are there other nominations?

Apparently Mr Miller knows that there was a United States in 1623. Mr Miller should rewrite the history books.
