It’s funny that so many people are making fun of him for his mid-life crisis car, forgetting that when Elly gets her mid-life crisis they wind up with something far more expensive—a baby. And yes, I realize a baby cannot be compared to a car, just trying to point out the double standard.
Yellow was never a popular color for autos; except taxi cabs. And that was because they were easily spotted. The change came with the advent of mercury vapor street and parking lot lights. They made red cars appear grey at night and yellow stood out. Ah, the vagaries of technology.
Seems to me either in past or future? Elly was struggling to keep an old can-opener working (couldn’t afford a new one) when a delivery service arrives with thousands of dollars worth of stereo equipment! (Our local paper started carrying this strip when April came along, and when the strip ended they did not pick up the repeats. Hooray for Gocomics!)
In dim light, red looks black and is barely visible, while yellow s visible in dim light, woods or snow background, etc. International orange is the only color more visible against more conditions.
I still don’t get the insistence on “midlife crisis”. I’m in my 60s and still have my Ducati. So, am I having a midlife crisis that’s lasted over 20 years? Or do I just like bikes? I miss the 911 I used to have, as well. There’s no such thing as a “midlife crisis”. There are only people who are jealous they can’t afford what someone else has and who feel the need to shame them, when they really should shame themselves.
I want a sports car! I am too practical to get one, especially without even discussing it with my husband, though. And I am his age, with kids the same ages, so I do understand.
Spoilers…
Their future “midlife crises” turn out great! I love how her hobby becomes a career, and his is so much fun. This is just a weak prequel to them (and agree that April is a happy accident, not a life crisis). But many of us are employed in jobs for years and decades, are careful and save money and stay home on weekends for the kids, and these little crises are real and valuable.
In 1970, I worked in a car wash on the weekends. The bright yellow cars – usually Chargers, Challengers and other MOPAR super cars, were almost driven by(to me, at the time), little old ladies. Yes, the car wash was in Pasadena, Ca.No self respecting racer would have one, but the ladies liked thier yeller cars.

Ah, Michael’s hit the nail on the head. Which is probably where Dad would like to hit him for pointing that fact out to Elly.

She’ll end up wanting to drive it herself…

Yes, April was an “oops” baby. The title of the collection book for that part of the strip is “What? Me Pregnane?”

April was not planned – she was a surprise. If you go to www.fbofw dot com, then browse storylines, there is one listed as Elly’s Surprise Pregnancy.
