I once saw a kildeer doing the âbroken wingâ act, so I looked in the opposite direction. There was the other parent, running across a freshly mowed lawn, convoying three chicks to some shrubbery. The chicks were moving so fast, their legs were invisible, like little hovercraft following the contours about an inch above the short grass.

The killdeer built nests all around in the power plant. We flagged the nests so the mower didnât get them.
