I saw Walkabout years ago and agree it is a good movie…… hard to imagine if kids would do as well nowdays. Any time I leave town ( a very small one) I consider it an adventure.
Ottod and Meggsiefan: Well, I’ll be buttered on both sides, Have never ventured outside of Oz but have never heard of that WALKABOUT movie. Any links please?
Ottod: Being an incurable insomniac, I have found TV viewing essential in getting some shuteye without the need for sleeping tablets. Another good remedy is having an important speaker at a club of which I am a member and, oops, was also President.
Ginger and Bennie are absolutely spot on. How vividly I recall being their age and deliberately setting out on our scooters on an ‘Adventure’ during which anything could happen.
Because we were in suburbia, it usually ended up as finding water in its natural habitat (who remembers that monologue called ‘What Is A Boy’?), coming home with wet shoes and/or clothes and therefore being chastised for going down to the creek again.
Now that creek is underground and I pity the kids who are deprived of the chance to smuggle home tins of water with tadpoles in it, the odd ‘treasure’ left by the last rain, etc., and are victims of the attitude to protect kids from life’s experiences.
Even walking to school was an ‘Adventure’, with the first lesson for the day being to show something to the class that we found on the way, to talk about it and answer questions. What can kids now say about their trip in the 4-wheel drive to the front gate of the school? Where will they now find the confidence to speak to an audience?
Jason mentioned making early Meggsie material available during the 90th year celebrations. Maybe we will see Ginger and his mates fishing in ponds without safety fences around them, coping with dogs whose owners were not afraid of being sued, teachers who had the ability to enforce some sort of authority, and so on and so forth.

G’day Jason, Dry, JFri, Meggsiefan, Ottod, Frank and all Meggsie’s mates.
Something tells me this great series is going to get even better. Can’t wait for tomorrow.
Graffiti: Sure does, it can be a real hassle getting through the daze.

Morning all!
There be monsters! (As if some of the real Australian fauna wasn’t scary enough.)
I can’t imagine 7 days without sleep. I can’t even imagine a 1-hour meeting (or a network TV show) without it.
