We have some squirrel-planted pecans, but every spring, we have a veritable lawn of red oaks. I give away the most robust before the first mowing – after the wild onion harvest. Ours are never in contention for the best yard award, but could be a winner of “the most productive without agriculture” if they had that competition. Plus blackberries. All on a 120×200 foot lot that is mostly structures.
One of the characteristics of a rodent is that their front teeth never stop growing and they have to gnaw to keep them ground down. Squirrels are designed for chewing through nut shells.

In Oklahoma, there are little pecan trees sprouting everywhere from squirrel-planted nuts where they buried them and forgot where.

Squirrels are credited with planting the forests which originally stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River in the U.S.
