Red: I wonder what kids did before television?
Rover: My guess is they were stronger in both mind and body. They would have read more and been incredibly active simply by having increased responsibilities around the house or farm.
Red: How depressing.

Red, you can read in front of the television…a little multi-tasking can be a good thing!

Television? Kids don’t watch television these days… if it isn’t on a phone or tablet they simply don’t care. I used to feel like rover about television – now I long for the days of TV over this new stuff. I guess I’m old.

I haven’t had a TV in over 20 years and don’t miss it. I listen to the radio and also use the computer for some things.

I lived in the pre-TV times and we did spend most of the time outdoors where the fun was. We learned to be creative. We even made an original skateboard that consisted of a 2X6 board with skate nailed to it. We eventually did get TV though, but it didn’t change our will to play outside that much.

We read, alot. The whole family did. Getting a library card was a big deal…I got mine in first grade after I learned how to print my name.Other than that, if we weren’t playing outside, we listened to the radio, or 78 rpm records, while we played inside with blocks, little plastic cars, plastic cowboys, or craft toys – coloring, paper dolls, etc. We also played a lot of board games…After dinner, we did homework. …Unlike, most kids, we were allowed to stay up late – 9pm on school nights, 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

But what did kids do back before even books had been invented? Mostly physical pursuits, I assume, when they didn’t have chores to do. Sometimes they’d hang around elders looking for knowledge and wisdom.

And they would have matured mentally faster too. Some never reach that stage in our society.

The main cause of childhood obesity is not diet as everyone is pushing these days (remember what we used to eat as kids?) It is lack of physical activity. Not only do kids spend too much time parked in front of a TV or tablet, but they are taught that from an early age (can’t go outside without adult supervision…) We had a television when I was a kid, and I always watched my favorites, I also read a great deal, but from an early age I spent a great deal of time outdoors doing things that kids do … or at least they used to do.
