A few interesting things in this comic strip:

Another reference to Garfield in the same month. Garfield showed up last week with Lizzie’s Garfield bank. Jim Davis was hot stuff in 1988 as Garfield the comic strip was hitting its stride on its way to becoming the most popular comic strip. Jim Davis would get the coveted Reuben Award for his comic strip in early 1989.

The last time we saw Mike’s headphones was in the comic strip a few weeks back when Mike put his headphones on John to show him how much better his music was than John’s classical. It is a little amazing that John is giving them back, but it’s not too surprising they didn’t get put up and ended up in the couch.

The mysterious Auntie Grace. Never mentioned before and never mentioned again (that I can find).

Silver dollar. The Canadian one dollar coin, commonly called the loonie, is a gold-coloured one-dollar coin introduced in 1987, so it was around when this comic strip was originally published in 1988. 1967 marked the end of the Canadian silver dollar as a business strike, or a coin issued for circulation. In effect, Lynn is telling us that Michael is not being responsible for a silver dollar coin that would have been considered a collectible in 1988.

This strip began with the Garfield pin. We had gone to visit Jim Davis (creator of Garfield) and his family, and had returned with some treasures–one of which was a tiny Garfield pin. I can’t remember if I ever told Jim that the pin had been lost and found, and that a Sunday page had been the result. Thanks, Jim!
