Iāve been lucky so far, only four āincidentsā over the years, and none of them caused me any real hardships. At work one day, an FBI agent wanted to talk to me (caused quite a stir until I told everyone what it was about āŗ). They had caught a guy who had stolen my tax refund check out of my mailbox and had tried to cash it. Then, long before the Internet, I was getting my first phone, and the phone company told me there had been an āirregularityā with my SSN. They had turned the matter over to the authorities (maybe the FBI again), and a guy who was using other peopleās SSNs, (but apparently not to buy stuff), was caught. Then my stockbroker notified me that there was a chance that an employee had stolen some client data, which turned out to be nothing. And finally, my credit card company said some card numbers had been compromised and I was issued a new card.
