Don’t Americans feel sympathy for other runners that ‘hit the wall’? Or is it that by running a marathon they deserve it? Or that it wouldn’t happen if they got the long training runs in and/or paced better? Or that running 18 miles cannot be fun, whatever happens after?
I dropped out of a 102 mile bike race at 100 miles last year. Legs were too locked up to pedal, felt sick to my stomach and was already slower than my prior times by that point. Plus the last two miles were probably a 7-8% grade.
