Actually, there IS a South Pole star, but it’s too faint to be seen with the naked eye, and it would only be visible by stargazers who live south of the Equator in any event. Sigma Octantis sits almost exactly on the South Celestial Pole, just as Polaris sits almost exactly on the North Celestial Pole, but because Sigma Octantis is only 5th magnitude, it’s much harder to spot with just the eyes. The long arm of the Southern Cross, incidentally, points almost directly at it.
