I’m up to about 6500 steps over the last 6 weeks. I walk a lap around the mall before work, at least most of a lap at lunch and that puts me at around 5500. Unfortunately I’m anchored to my desk most of the day.
There is absolutely no science behind the claim that everyone should walk 10,000 steps.
The origins of the 10,000-steps recommendation aren’t exactly scientific. Pedometers sold in Japan in the 1960s were marketed under the name “manpo-kei,” which translates to “10,000 steps meter,” said Catrine Tudor-Locke, director of the Walking Behavior Laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La. The idea resonated with people, and gained popularity with Japanese walking groups, Tudor-Locke said.

I have a step counter on my phone. I really like it when I’m on the tractor. Seems that’s a lot of steps generated right there. ;)
