Ah the wonderful wall phone with a cord just long enough to reach a chair or maybe a table. No need to be comfortable since calls were always short. Trivia Did you know that the original area codes were set so that the operator would use low numbers for frequently call locations e.g. LA (213), NYC (212) vers high long click numbers for Montana (406), S Dakota (605) and BTW 0=10 clicks.

Years ago, when my son was still living with us and no one had cell phones I decided to see just how much people did NOT listen to greetings. So our message said to press “1” for my husband, “2” for me, “3” for my son and “4” if you wanted to talk to Ted about the horse. We live in a suburban subdivision, than which there has never been less-horsey country; have never had friend nor relative named Ted; and NOBODY ever said, “Who the heck is Ted and what horse???”

Back in the ’60’s and ’70’s, we had a wall phone exactly like Red’s, right down to the beige color.
