Considering the point of the comic strip is that men are stupid and live in ignorance, this is a surprising conclusion from Annie. It is almost as if she is saying she dislikes going to the doctor, but her femininity is forcing her to go against her will.
You have to conclude that males have it easier than females. Which is a given and correct in most cases. Still one doesn’t want to die prematurely either.
I love this strip. First, because of all that’s going on. The child climbing on her and the handing over of the coffee cup are a slice of life in themselves, and I particularly enjoy those.
Second, because it’s true. Even though we might feel like we should guilt men into visiting the doctors because of our own guilt (as we are expected to visit every year or 2 our entire adult lives), I think all people would rather avoid the yearly fear and dressing-down from doctors, and live in ignorance. Facing the fear more often doesn’t take it away, but kind of keeps our mortality more in our view.
The having the kid climb on her adds to the “I’d rather be a man” idea and balances the drawing and talking bits of the strip perfectly.
From my age and perspective, it has seemed often that men get the better deal. In most cases when a woman is pregnant everyone hopes the baby will be male, in most countries boys are valued higher than girls, and in general given more respect. So what I can’t understand (and this is not a non politically correct question, I just wonder!) why are there so many more male to female transsexuals than female to male ones?
Wasn’t it Mickey Mantle who said “if I knew I was going to live this long,I would have taken better care of my self” I hardly seen the inside of a Dr’s or dentist office before the age of 40,and lived a life of excess in most ways, but I’m paying for it now. Rather stupid of me wasn’t it?

I don’t want to come back as a man, I want to come back as someone’s pampered cat.

My wife bugs me about my health, too. I know it’s her way of showing that she loves me, but it sure comes off as a lot of nagging. Oy.
