I’ve seen dogs with lives so miserable that they’d be 100 times happier living in a kennel. For one, a small 15-year-old mixed breed that spent it’s entire life in a wire cage with barely enough room to stand up in. Dogs bred for fighting (or worse, those used to train fighting dogs) also have horrible lives. People can be really thoughtless, if not evil.
We had a rescue Scottish Terrier that I am certain had been kicked by a previous owner. She had a life-long terror of men wearing boots. Luckily, I never wear boots.
We rescued a Pit off the streets a few years ago. She weighed 27 pounds, and had been starved to the point her stomach had shrunk & she couldn’t even eat 1/2 a can of food. People like that p-ss me off.
I worked at a shelter for 6 years, more than long enough to develop a real hatred of people who harm animals whether deliberately or through neglect. We probably got at least one case a year of severely starved dogs that had been dumped to fend for themselves (it was a small city surrounded by farm land)
