Since “were” is derived from an Old English word meaning “man” (not “male”, specifically, but “human being”), a were mouse has to be either a man who turns into a mouse or a mouse that turns into a man.
“Of Mice and Men” must be written about this mouse.
The squeak sort of makes him look silly, not scary. I like it!
