I agree and Kirby was one of those I stole from. If you are going to steal, make sure its the best then make it your own your way. What a marvelous tribute. Made my throat tighten.
Gavin, this is brilliant! You’ve really lifted my day from the ordinary to the level of pure delight. You’re generally a wonderful artist and cartoonist, but this is extraordinary. Thank you!
. . . Gavin, thank-you for this strip and showing us, who has inspired you. I have tried to follow you for many years and enjoyed your unique approach to your art. However, I believe that your talent is definitely “a gift from God”, as many of the artists, who’s work I have seen, admired, and tried to follow. However, you neglected to mention my personal favorite, Walt Disney. My grandparents went to grade school with him in Marceline, Missouri. From what I understand, as a young boy, he showed his rough drawings to our rural family doctor, who encouraged Walt to “keep drawing”. Mr. Disney has credited his short time in Marceline to what he was able to achieve in his life. Isn’t everyone born with “a gift from God”? Definitely, you are also gifted, so “keep drawing”! ;)
My only regret is that you didn’t show the trip down the darker hall, exhibiting Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Shelton, London, Justin Green; Willy Murphy; Griffith; Kim Deitch; Spain Rodriguez; Flenniken; Lynch.
