I predict that one of these days Trump will pull the cool trick of quoting famous philosophers to support his ideas and actions. His team of corrupt researchers will cherry-pick and distort sections of Aristotle, Plato, St. Thomas, Descartes, Rousseau, Nietzsche, and even the Bible. For many matters we consider evil today, there were erudite apologists in the past. And how will liberals react? Most don’t read deeply of history any more than do conservatives.
Principles and values are confused, and the loudest voices consider both malleable to current political expediency. Those intellectuals who could clarify matters are considered suspicious and pedantic. One of these days we will again have a presidential candidate the quality of Jefferson or Adams — and he will certainly lose.
