Paige: Mom, do you think there's any truth to all this talk about Y2K computer catastrophes? You know, widespread power outages... no phones... no heat... no water... the end of the world as we know it.... Is there a chance it's going to happen? Andy: I seriously doubt it. Why? Paige: I was kinda hoping I could blow off studying for finals. Andy: If you'd really like to see the end of your world...

A bunch of software guys knew there would be some problems. They didn’t know how bad they’d be, or if after-the-fact fixes would be sufficient, so they wanted to get them addressed in advance. Unfortunately, they had to make the issue appear many times worse than it was to get any management attention and funding to get the work done.
I used the whole flap as an excuse to throw out some old computing hardware that was mostly useless, but the old timers were still clinging to.

And we’ll do it all over again in 2038!
(yes, my first post shown was yesterday but I’ve been posting for 2 weeks, noticed on a friend’s computer that my posts were not visible not logged in/on other accounts. Tech support seems to have fixed the problem.)

This whole 2012 thing is just the result of an ancient Mayan marketing strategy to force you to get a new B’akt’an calender every 394 solar years. Dec. 21? 2012 is the end of the 13 B’akt’an calender and thus the end of this Long Count. Make sure you get the 1 B’akt’an calender and you’ll be set for about the next four centuries.

and Global Warming will cause just as much of a disaster as Y2K did

Y2K wasn’t a disaster because people admitted there was a problem and fixed it ahead of time. They didn’t stand around ignoring the experts and saying there if there wasn’t a problem in 1998, there wasn’t ever going to be one.
