So they’ve known each other since they were kids, it should be a sweet story, but somehow I’m not getting that feeling.

OK, I think I get it: Ebenezer Scrooge never had children, but his nephew did. One of them like to hang out with “Great-Uncle Ebenezer” and learned some of his ways. Their descendants came to the New World and continued the tradition, all the way down to Sedine’s mom, who doesn’t understand her daughter’s apparent lack of focus in that department.
