Now there’s an old time phone – in Nancy’s time, the phone company (remember when people called them “Ma Bell”) was still issuing old time 1930s phones to people, just before they came out with the newer rotary dial phone. Customers wanted the newest and latest (just like today), so the phone repair shop would put a new looking case over the old innards and voila!… instant “new phone” for cheap… that said, I still have my 1964 rotary dial phone in black in storage…

When I was in several bands & our sound man was getting levels on the microphones, we would say check check. Then 1 of us would always say cash only!

    H. Allen Smith claims that in the days of upright phones, pranksters would sometimes call rural customers and say they were going to blow the lines out at noon, and urge them to put a hood over the phone around that time to keep the detritus from getting all over.

That part may be true. He went on to say that when the prankster made an excuse to drop by at that time, he’d see Maw and Paw sitting by, watching to see it happen. I suspect wishful embellishment here.
