I believe Sluggo represents Bushmiller himself, desperately looking for inspiration for another daily strip. He ultimately gives up and goes with what we see here. We, his fans, are represented by the dog, initially waiting for some humor to lighten our day only to be disappointed by Panel 4 where our morose expression was never given a chance to change to one of glee.
Also, did anyone notice that Bushmiller drew the people’s car in Panel 3 – a VW Beetle? Cool!
