I was 14 years old. My older brother said to me: âThe Japs bombed Pearl Harbor,â To which I replied âWhereâs Pearl Harbor?â We heard all about it on the radio. There was no TV then. I remember the family gathering around the radio to hear President Roosevelt deliver his famous âA day that will live in infamyâ speech. My brother later joined the Marines and served mostly aboard ship in the Pacific. He came home safely after the war.
About a week or so later we could see films about it on news reels at the local movie houses.
I was only 4 1/2 at the time in San Francisco. But I remember that my dad was an air raid warden. One night, a sub or two was spotted off our coast. We went to the next door neighborsâ apartment. They had a floor lamp that had a lit bottom and they put heavy papers around it to soften the light. Windows had black shades. It was a long night.
