Clowns are bad for business, as well. I realize that few of you readers are in the business I’m in, but I assure you that clowns have little or no regard in this small world of mine. I am, by trade, a magician.
There was an article in an upstate NY newspaper a few years back (I’m originally from that area) that quoted a clown at a clown convention.
“With the make-up on, I can be anything I want to be and as stupid as I choose. No one knows who I am!”
Well, I WANT people to know who I am! Even at a kids party, I’m the guy I sold to Mom or Dad. Me! Not some jerk hiding behind make-up!
Now, I don’t do a lot of those events these days. I do mostly corporate work, trade shows, a few select restaurants and private adult parties. Still, I feel the pain of the honest and talented childrens’ entertainer.
I paid my dues in those living rooms and poolsides. Still do “appearences” for family and friends with what is now considered “old school” magic. No blood, swearing, or terms delivered monotone like, “Hey, watch this…..”
Sorry to get serious on you guys, but we’ve hit a nerve here. Lots of people hate clowns for personal reasons. I hate clowns for professional reasons.
Who will speak for the clowns? I’m afraid that even the word “clown” has taken on negative associations over time. I’m sorry, but I can’t motivate myself to defend them.
By the way, does anybody know if $16 is reasonable for an “ed hardy shorttankwoman”. I’m not sure what it is, so I’d be rolling the dice a bit, but mostly I don’t want to get ripped off. On the other hand, I know they couldn’t post it if it weren’t legit.
I identify with Boog…I’m 46 and still dislike clowns.
No, I don’t run from them as I scream in fear, but they make me uncomfortable. Perhaps I have issues with people whose faces are hidden, or perhaps it’s the exaggerated features.
There is one such clown deceased I remember from childhood remarkable man name Red Skelton. Actors now who protray clowns give them a bad name including one who recently passed on playing Batman’s namesie The Joker.
I’m sure men like Lou Jacobs or Emmett Kelly would be saddened to hear that you don’t like clowns. (For those who don’t know, these two were world-famous clowns with the Ringling Bros & Barnum & Bailey Circus) Circus clowning is an art form and they go to school in Florida to learn their skills. Wearing funny make-up and clothes does NOT make you a clown.

I think that’s a stealthy maid who springs out at you with your slippers in her mouth. Did you get the phone number before it was deleted?
