South of Market in San Francisco went a little faster…

A friend’s older brother lived (illegally but nobody cared) in a cheap studio space in an old, dilapidated warehouse full of artists, about 1967 …. probably $50 a month.

The interior walls were old sheets and Indian print bedspreads… the kitchen, a hot plate. I was young, and awed.

Part of that building later became a trendy bar.

    About 1978 a more well-off photographer friend bought a new “live-work” studio/loft a few blocks away…

the development rose on the site of another old warehouse or two…

I haven’t seen him in years. But in 2018? His place is probably worth a million bucks!

I can’t remember where but a few years back there was a fire at a warehouse full of artists, who lived and worded there.
