My Harrier (larger than a beagle/tricolor like her brother, Fred the coonhound) likes early AMs because she wants to eat! The coonhound really couldn’t care less, at least not at 7A.
I may be misremembering, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a doggie gate on the back door (although I may be thinking of Garfield).
Opposable thumbs to open his doggie food, that’s another matter.
