I actually did something like this with a $500 bill after hearing a similar comment from my grandma. Grandma was not pleased.

G’day Jason, Dry, JFri, Ottod, Meggsiefan, Frank and all Meggsie’s mates.

We had a gang (the nice sort) at school where it was necessary to have a penny that had been placed on the tram tracks for membership.

That Dollar coin would have less hope of survival if Ginger had said his father was a used car dealer.

Whatever - the fate of an iridium based Aussie coin placed on a train track is unknown; would it be malleable and squash or shatter because it is brittle? No doubt we are about to find the answer to that and how many kids read Meggsie in the not too distant future.

When I was travelling to school by train in the late 1970s, we used to place 2 cent coins on the railway tracks. We’d end up with a shiny round thin flat piece of metal. On the odd occasion, the coin would slide a little from the centre of the track and we’d have a flat coin with about 3 mm on one edge untouched by the train.

With all the security (and safety awareness) nowadays, kids wouldn’t have the opportunity to do this anymore (plus there aren’t any 2 cent coins left).
