I know I have a miniscule chance of winning a lottery but I spend a small amount on tickets every week because there are people winning a lottery every week and I won’t become one of them if I don’t buy a ticket.
I’m a little fuzzy on the details, but I read recently there’s a theory emerging in the field of probability having to do with unlikely events occurring in very large sample populations; something along the lines that their probability increases disproportionately as the sample size approaches infinity. Anyway, the bottom line was that implausible things may happen with greater frequency than traditional statistical calculations might predict.
