I had a guy like that who walked into the convenience store with the mask on, pulled knife and demanded money. It took the clerk a while to realize he was serious, because the mask wasn’t so effective, and she recognized him as a customer who came in every morning and thought it was a joke. She knew his name and where he worked. We almost beat him to his work.
But my favorite is the guy who was waiting for a customer to leave so he could rob the store. So he held a $20 bill in his hand and waited in line. When the customer was leaving, he asked for something and put the $20 down, and when the customer was out the door, he pulled his gun. The clerk promptly handed over the money. Unfortunately, he had just made a drop and there was only $15. The guy grabbed it and ran. But he forgot his $20. So he paid $5 to rob the store. And the police in the next town immediately recognized him as a local crook.
I’ve read stories of guys going in to rob a store, but start off filling out job applications, and leaving the application. People robbing banks but write the note on their own deposit slips. Unreal.
