The day that people realize that the colleges just use the star players to make boocoo dollars, will be the day we finally see just compensation for college players. What happens when a star like Newton or Tebow get a career ending injury in college? Oh sorry about that, here’s your degree in basket weaving, and don’t the the door hit you bleeep on the way out. Get real and start paying the players.
The problem with that, of course, is that every kid graduating from high school will become a free agent, going to the school which can offer him the best financial deal, not necessarily the best education. And that’s just not right. After all, college athletics is about ensuring these student athletes are prepared for the real world.
The real problem is that Newton was–past tense because HE has been cleared, presumably after this strip went to press–facing charges that had nothing to do with academics, but recruiting practices and money. I lost a lot of respect for Millar and Hinds today.
