For anyone that is curious, a monkey is the platform that cannonballs were stacked on aboard ship. They were originally made from iron. When the iron contracted, the cannonballs rolled off the monkey and all over the ship. So, they started making them out of brass since it didn’t contract in cold weather. And the joke is, “It’s cold enough to freeze the balls off of a brass monkey” which it could not do. Just an exaggeration to show how cold it was!
