That reminds me of the joke from Monty Python’s “The Meaning of Life” when the new mother asks the doctors if the child is a boy or girl and the doctor says “It’s a little early to start imposing roles on it!” Except in this case their not kidding.

Never mind genders; the use of plural “they” instead of singular “he” or “s/he” gives me agita.
