At my favorite breakfast diner, if the cook sees me walking in my order will be up before the waitress (unasked) brings me my black coffee. At a restaurant I occasionally go to for lunch, the waitress completed my order— she remembered me from last time. And at my warehouse club, they sent me a flyer card with only the coupons I needed for items I frequently buy there. How is the last different? It’s handy, sure, but the waitstaff isn’t keeping a database or potentially reselling my data to advertisers (or others… dun-dun-DUN!).
It’s just like a trip to Sonic. They can’t hear the instructions that follow, “I’ll have the #4,” […ATW with mustard, onion rings and Diet Coke,] because they are already up-selling “large” or ice cream.
I know places like that in Courtenay and Campbell River. We would go up almost every year since 1999 and people would know us and remember what we liked. Now that we are here permanently we gave a shock to one waitress by arriving earlier in the year than we had previously. When we told her that we were now here for good she welcomed us and the owner comped our meal. It is good to now live in a civilised country.
