Many people haven’t learned, society just moves from one deity du jour to the next as the centuries change. Always expecting something but never getting it. When they pray, and something positive happens, they attribute it to their deity. But when nothing happens, “god works in mysterious ways.” Yet, either way that same thing was likely to happen.

With RJ’s kind of luck, a load of Twinkies and HoHos will fall from an airplane and land on Verne.

There are people who have consciously revived and practice Roman polytheistic religion, which, if you’re going to have a religion, at least sounds like a fun and creative way to have one. I’m not sure if they practice animal sacrifice, however; I think getting a permit to cut the throat of a cow during a religious ceremony would be rather hard in most places.
