I had one of those when I was younger, it was an awesome nightlight. I’m going to get one again when I move, thanks for the idea Will Henry.

Wallace must have had a classical education, to know what that is!

I was going with a guy I didn’t really like all that much that year and he gave his mother a lava lamp for a gift shortly before I was over at their house for dinner for the first time. It was mesmerizing, but reminded me of the short story “The Jar,” in which vaguely recognizable/unrecognizable contents floating in liquid in a very large jar become a local sensation. Creepy.

When I was around Wallace’s age, I begged for a lava lamp and one of those electric orb things (you know like in the X-Files intro) for Christmas. Thankfully I got them.

I’ve got a lava lamp, but the light bulb is burned out. I haven’t really tried to replace it, but the point of the lava lamp is that the light both lights up its vicinity and heats the “lava”. That’s directly opposite the “modern” light bulbs which minimize heating of the bulb.
