In reality, you cannot “turn off the safety”. There is only one valve with 3 positions: Off, Pilot, and On. You can’t turn it to On without the Pilot light being lit. You turn it to Pilot to light it but the gas is not On until you push it in and hold it to light it. Then when the thermocouple gets warm it will let the pilot light stay lit. Now you can turn the valve to the On position but the main burners still won’t be on until the thermostat sends a signal to provide heat. If the Pilot light ever goes out, then as a safety mechanism, all gas is shut off.
This is how re-runs become dated. Now a days you would just watch a youtube video on how to start your furnace (the one specific to your model). I suppose the joke could be that he watched one that did not have any likes.
We had an old gas drier that I was always having to relight the pilot light on by holding down a button until my thumb almost dropped off. One evening I was doing that and reached up to turn on the ceiling fan, and discovered what can happen with an old non-grounded electrical system. My hand clamped down around the light chain, and I couldn’t let go until my knees buckled and I jerked the chain out of the switch. When the light went out, I thought I had died!

makes me wonder: does the furnace repair man wear a cap to hide HIS singed-off hair?
