I remember the real-life Mutt and Jeff, Abbott and Costello, doing this bit in a movie. But I bet it predates them both and goes back to Vaudeville.

Hagar gets into a lot of jams like this, but he is always fine for the next strip.

I always thought that last panel was unnecesary.
