Marcie is observant – she recognizes there are stages to this, and sees Peppermint Patty regresses to “Denial”… but at some point, Marcie will recognize her own hidden attraction to ol’ Wishy-Washy Charlie Brown down the line…

Protesting a tad too much there, Patty?

Marcie will lapse right back to calling her ‘Sir,’ and will later settle on calling Charlie Brown ‘Charles.’

I have noticed, Marcie. Quite an improvement.

And we see once again that Marcie is the brains of the outfit…

I’ve never really seen these very early episodes with Marcie (beyond the camp sequence where she first showed up as nameless little oddball). I’m actually kind of surprised to see that her mature, sage-like personality was more or less already in place. I had been under the impression that she was originally something of a space cadet, based on her depiction in A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING (1973) where she’s kind of a thickheaded child to Peppermint Patty’s frustrated adult.
