Actually, the time-consuming part of printing from movable type is “distributing” the pieces of type in the case when you break down a body of type after the press run. The more accurately it’s done, the better for the composer, and a skilled typesetter can compose very rapidly (especially if all the type is in the right place). True, the hot metal machines (linotype and monotype) compose a bit faster, but not much, really, since much time is lost if you hit the wrong key (unlike word processing). The most efficient operators were rather slow and careful. The beauty part of hot metal is that you don’t have to distribute type at the end of the print run, it just gets melted down for reuse.
The Paige typesetting machine, that Mark Twain invested a fortune in, in addition to being a mechanical monster (like linotype) simply set movable type, meaning that at the end of the print run the type had to be distributed by hand. Very little saving of time.

My son’s Yorkie raids the cat’s litter box and then throws it up. Quite the smell.
