We have been genetically modifying both vegetables and animals since domestication. It is called “artificial selection” where we choose what organisms get to reproduce to the point where some of them, like corn, can’t reproduce without human intervention.
It is amazing that people would shun food that had bacteria killed with radiation, even though the food, itself is not radioactive. However we gladly buy meat packed in carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide keeps the meat from turning brown. If it did turn brown, it would still be safe to eat, but nobody would buy it.
It’s a combination of marketing and what everybody thinks they know.

I’d have thought the AM apples would at least be square for easier packing.

Later that day, a bunch of guys dressed up as knights came in and bought up all the apples from the right hand bin.
