I briefly watched them, when they first came on, and found more interesting things to do after their third show. I do not feel like I missed anything from their “lasting” this long.
Stereotypical? Sure. But the harmful part was on the part of terrible human beings who would take this caricature and ignorantly project him onto real people. Apu was a hard- working family man who was warmly welcomed into local society, as are most Hindu people (and Sikh people and Muslim people who are all often ignorantly lumped together. )
Apu is an immigrant, family man, and proud business man. He is stereotypical Indian much like Comic Book Guy is stereotypical fat white slacker. People need to understand comedy and parody better as the country becomes more diverse.
I hope he has a stereotypical, Oxford educated cousin to take over the store. Or maybe the doctor retires & Apu’s stereotyped doctor cousin moves into that practice.
I’ve been to India several times on business—Delhi, Madras, Kolkatta, Jamshedpur, Mumbai / Bombay. Great place, great food, great people! Apu’s accent seems authentic to me. I’ll miss him and the Kwik-E Mart.
Hey dummies, I think the stupid, supposedly Caucasian family, with the idiot father, dim mother, total brat of a son, with the two little GIRLs being the only saving grace, is also “harmfully stereotypical”. In fact nearly all the characters in the Simpsons are stereotypical. So take a chill pill, you’ll live longer.
“Harmfully stereotypical”, and is dedicated to his work, married to a beautiful wife, capable to admit his wrongdoings and repent when he cheated on her, raises 8 children…
I don’t know, I find more harmfully stereotypical depicting the police as fat, lazy, incompetent and corrupt.

Apu was one of my favorite characters. Industrious and hard-working. And clever.

⇧ how typical of a right-winger to confuse “stereotypical” with “satirical”…
lack of vocabulary is a terrible thing…
