Back in the early 70’s I was stationed in Clovis, New Mexico. There was a watering hole called “The Boot Hill Saloon.” We’d cruise the parking lot, count the number of cars with Air Force stickers, count the number of pick-up trucks with gun racks. Give the cowboys a couple of extra points for being in shape, give ourselves a couple of extra points for being sober and make a decision on whether to go in.
At any rate, we’d leave just prior to 1 AM which was 2 AM (bar closing time) just across the border in Texas. We made sure we were gone by the time the Texans got there.
In truth, we never had any problems and I learned to appreciate (or at least tolerate) C&W music.
When we moved from drive-by shootings and drugs across the street in CA, we came to a beautiful house near some quiet woods in PA. When I heard shots I called the cops of course. She laughed and said it’s “squirrel” (season).
