Importantly, the geomagnetic poles are not the same as what we refer to as the true North and South poles. The magnetic poles are defined as the north and south points on the Earth’s surface as indicated by a compass. These are also sites where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the surface of the globe. At these two locations the magnetic needle would be vertical.
